Anywhere you turn, it seems, you can find a construction firm that claims to be flexible, hardworking and easy to get along with. Countless builders promote their values, creativity, and responsiveness. For AVB, such qualities aren’t mere claims. They’re as real as the concrete and wood, the mortar and brick of each home, community and commercial facility we build.
AVB doesn’t just talk. AVB listens. AVB sweats every detail. And once construction is finished, AVB commits –– to ongoing service that simply doesn’t end. From our beginnings over 34 years ago, AVB has been passionate about exceeding expectations, about getting every job done right, and then just a little better.
Dependable, honest, and committed, AVB people talk with our design instincts, our blueprints and our exceptional project management skills. AVB has become more than just another builder. We are a team of collaborators who have taken a process with a reputation for being difficult, and transformed it into something that’s smart, easy, and even enjoyable. We are innovators in green-building who are committed to leading the way in developing sustainable practices in design, construction –– and in the way we run our business.
We are constantly listening and thinking, sharing expertise and knowledge and best practices. We are craftsmen who explore the unique innovations of two distinctively different worlds –– of residential construction and commercial –– and find ways to bring those worlds together, one to enhance the other. We are people who put our heads together to devise solutions and to create more than another cookie cutter home or shoebox building. Something new. Something fresh. Something that fits your idea of the ideal place to live and work. All at a level of value that optimizes your investment.
Indeed, adding value is in every step of the AVB process. You see it in the beautiful communities that dot the local landscape. In Hidden Lake and Homestead, Barrington Shores and Oakland Hills. In high-visibility, beautiful-yet-functional commercial buildings –– from corporate headquarters to hospitals and educational facilities ––and dozens of other projects, you see the unmistakable mark of superior planning, consultation, and craftsmanship.
But there’s something you don’t see, as well. The quiet understanding that AVB is always there. Active in the community. Ready to respond with answers and service long after construction is finished. In each home. In each office and room and facility. Our customers know, AVB is different. AVB is better. AVB is the one builder that is passionate about making not just living spaces, but great places to live and do business and thrive. With AVB, there are no empty claims and promises. No false expectations. Just hard work. Real help. And results. This is AVB.
AVB creates lasting value through excellence in construction and development. We always give the extra effort to Build Something Better while developing long-term relationships that stand behind every endeavor.
Our employees and the values we share set us apart and make AVB a great place to work. Our values include:
AVB was formed in 1981 by Joe Gesmundo and Daryl Rynd. Daryl was a carpenter known for his focus on quality and his attention to detail. Joe was a developer devoted to creating first-rate developments integrated with nature. Together, the principals collaborated on the Kalamazoo area’s premier master-planned community – Woodbridge Hills. This visionary mixed-use community includes a retail center, medical and surgical buildings, office buildings, condominiums and upscale private residences and a private golf course.
Today AVB is a leading regional construction and development firm, offering expertise in both residential and commercial new construction, major remodeling projects, and real estate development.
AVB’s commercial construction portfolio includes the Brain and Spine Institute and the Stryker Center at Borgess Medical Center, the Stryker Corporation World Headquarters, Portage Northern High School, the AIA award winning Newell Rubbermaid International Design Center, the 12th Street Elementary School and the Western View on-campus student housing at Western Michigan University to name a few. Significant renovation projects include the Green Building of America Award-winning Educational Community Credit Union on 9th Street, Cole Nissan dealership in Kalamazoo, Borgess at Woodbridge Hills South, Keyser Insurance Agency, and the Ignertia Building brownfield redevelopment project in downtown Kalamazoo.
AVB’s development portfolio includes over a billion dollars’ worth of projects in Southwest Michigan. These projects include Woodbridge Hills, The Trade Centre, Oakland Hills, The Homestead, Barrington Shores, Greenspire, The Offices at Oakland Hills, Whisper Rock, Bridgeview at Angels Crossing, and Hidden Lake – communities that include hundreds of single family homes. AVB creates projects that create a sense of place that we stand behind, and deliver excellent value for both the short and long-term client.
Building better communities comes not only through great projects, but from a commitment to community service. AVB and our employees are active supporters of many organizations in greater Kalamazoo. AVB employees serve on the boards of 16 non-profit organizations in Kalamazoo County, and team members are involved in volunteer efforts and public service through a variety of community organizations. Take a look around, you will see us out and about, running, walking, cheering, donating, calling, and engaging; giving our best to further enhance the fine communities in which we live and work.
Our history as an environmentally-conscious builder and developer has become the foundation of our commitment to sustainability. A quick tour of any AVB project clearly shows our focus on being stewards of our earth. Creating projects that are integrated with nature is simply part of our DNA. Several of AVB’s staff have earned LEED® AP status. We have constructed a number of projects with a sustainable focus including several which have achieved LEED certification. We encourage clients to consider the full range of energy efficient opportunities when designing and constructing their project. We are a leader in building Energy Star, Green Built and HERS rated and certified homes. Our homes are consistently built 30% – 50% more energy efficient than required by the latest energy codes. We consistently employ minimally-intrusive site staging to minimize site disturbance. Conscientious practices are used on all jobsites to promote energy savings, sustainability, and conservation.
