Western Michigan University and Michigan Geological Survey Break Ground on New Geological Facility

Western Michigan University recently celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education (MGRRE) facility, a major step forward for geoscience research in our region. The 20,000-square-foot building, located on WMU’s Parkview Campus, will house the largest collection of geological samples in the state, including more than 600,000 linear feet of rock and mineral core. This $8 million investment will expand research capabilities with modern lab space, improved storage systems, and increased accessibility for students and industry partners. Beyond preservation, the facility will support critical work in areas like carbon capture, natural resource management, and identification of key minerals that impact everyday life. It also creates hands-on learning opportunities, giving students direct experience with real-world data and research challenges that prepare them for future careers.

We are proud to partner with WMU on another impactful project that not only strengthens the university’s research capabilities but also contributes to innovation and economic development across Michigan.

Workshop Sessions with Room35

Over the past month, we’ve had the opportunity to host a series of hands-on workshops in partnership with Room35, focused on supporting contractors who are newer to the industry. These sessions are designed to build confidence, strengthen understanding, and provide practical tools that can be applied right away in the field and in the office.

Each workshop has focused on a different aspect of the construction process. The first session centered on how to read drawings and what to look for when preparing bids. Attendees worked through real examples and discussed how to identify key details that impact scope, pricing, and coordination.

The second session shifted toward the financial and administrative side of construction. We walked through common project documentation, including draw forms, sworn statements, and waivers, and spent time answering questions along the way. These conversations helped clarify processes that can often feel overwhelming early in a contractor’s career.

Looking ahead, our next workshop will take a closer look at Procore. This session will focus on how the platform supports communication, documentation, and day-to-day project workflows, with an emphasis on practical use in real project settings.

These workshops have been a great opportunity to connect with trades professionals, share knowledge, and support the next generation of builders. We’ve appreciated the thoughtful questions, strong participation, and willingness to learn that each group has brought to the table, and we look forward to continuing the series.
