In today’s higher education environment, athletics facilities are no longer just places to train or compete. They are recruitment tools. Donor engagement platforms. Community connectors. And increasingly, reflections of a university’s values.
At Western Michigan University, AVB has served as a long-term construction management partner across athletic, academic, and community-driven initiatives, helping WMU deliver projects that elevate campus life while strengthening the broader Bronco ecosystem. The result is a model for how collaborative construction can support athletics departments far beyond the building itself.
Project One: Creating Premium Experiences That Build Engagement at WMU’s Stadium Club
Universities across the country are rethinking how premium athletic spaces can strengthen alumni relationships and donor participation. At WMU’s Waldo Stadium, AVB partnered with the university to transform the former President’s Suite into a reimagined Stadium Club, a modern hospitality environment designed to enhance gameday experience while honoring institutional identity.
The renovation balanced aesthetics, functionality, and operational continuity within an active athletics venue. Interior upgrades, improved circulation, and enhanced gathering spaces created a destination that serves multiple audiences: donors, alumni, campus leadership, and fans.
When managed by a partner who understands occupied, high-visibility athletic environments, well executed renovations can extend the value of existing assets, driving engagement without requiring new construction.
Project Two: Investing Directly in Student Athletes through the Women’s Basketball Locker Room Renovation
Recruitment, retention, and performance all start with the daily student athlete experience. WMU’s Women’s Basketball Locker Room renovation focused on delivering a space that supports preparation, recovery, and team culture.
AVB worked alongside the university and design partners to overhaul the locker room with modern finishes, personalized athlete spaces, and enhanced technology, all within a tight schedule and an occupied facility. The result is a space that reflects the caliber of the program and reinforces the university’s commitment to equity in athletics.
Student athlete spaces send a powerful message. Thoughtful renovations, delivered efficiently and with minimal disruption, can have outsized impact on morale, pride, and recruiting.
Project Three: Supporting Performance Beyond the Field at Ernest Wilbur Hall (DPT Program)
Athletics departments increasingly rely on interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly with sports medicine, physical therapy, and human performance programs. AVB’s renovation of space within Ernest Wilbur Hall for WMU’s Doctorate of Physical Therapy program demonstrates how academic projects can directly support athletic success.
The renovation delivered hands-on lab environments and collaborative learning spaces that prepare future clinicians to work with active populations, including collegiate athletes. While not a traditional athletics facility, the project strengthens the ecosystem that supports athlete health, recovery, and long-term performance.
Facilities that bridge academics and athletics create long-term value, especially when design and construction teams understand how those programs intersect.
Beyond the Jobsite: Community Engagement Through Athletics at CommUniverCity
AVB’s partnership with WMU doesn’t end at project closeout. AVB is an ongoing supporter of CommUniverCity, an athletics-based community engagement initiative that brings businesses, alumni, and fans together on game day.
By participating in and supporting CommUniverCity, AVB helps foster an inclusive, high-energy environment that strengthens town and gown relationships while directly supporting WMU Athletics. The program exemplifies how athletics can serve as a catalyst for broader community impact.
The strongest partners don’t just build facilities; they show up for the programs, events, and experiences that surround them.
Supporting the Modern Student Athlete: NIL and Leadership Engagement
As collegiate athletics evolves, AVB continues to engage where it matters most. By supporting WMU’s Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) initiatives, AVB helps advance opportunities that empower student athletes beyond competition.
Additionally, AVB’s Principal and Chief Operating Officer, Greg Dobson, serves on the WMU Athletics Board, contributing leadership insight and long-term perspective to the university’s athletic mission. This level of involvement reflects a deep commitment to partnership, +not just project delivery.
Partners who understand today’s athletics landscape, and actively participate in it, bring added value beyond construction expertise.
A Replicable Model for Higher Education Athletics
Across premium fan spaces, student athlete facilities, academic environments, and community initiatives, AVB’s work with Western Michigan University illustrates a consistent approach: listen first, collaborate closely, and deliver with purpose.
AVB is a construction partner who understands the operational realities of campus life, and the broader role athletics plays in institutional success, and their partnership with WMU offers a compelling model for what’s possible when construction management is treated as a strategic relationship, not just a transaction.
