During our 42+ years as a premier Kalamazoo custom builder, AVB has created a design and construction process that is tailored to be an enjoyable homeowner experience while maximizing the value of your investment. Our talented staff will guide you through every step of our proven process, including design, selections, construction, and service.
Premier Developments
All of our communities are professionally designed to balance neighborhood living with the surrounding natural landscape. Selecting a home within one of our communities will allow homeowners to experience the benefits of a master planned community including amenities such as a community clubhouse, a pool, walking trails, parks, and preserved greenspace throughout the community. All communities have a thoughtfully designed appearance and a welcoming neighborhood atmosphere.
Dedicated Service
AVB will ensure your new home will have the enduring qualities to provide a lifetime of enjoyment. Once you have settled into your new home and have a chance to “test drive” everything, we will be there to do the fine tuning. You will be treated to a 60-day and 11-month walk-through with our service team to make sure you are completely satisfied. Further, we encourage you to call us anytime you have a question about your new home. Our dedicated customer care team will be there to answer your call, schedule your service quickly, correct conveniently, and follow-up humbly.
Where We Build
We build high-end custom homes all around the greater Kalamazoo area, most within a one hour drive of our Portage, MI office. We build both inside our own communities and outside them too, on your land or ours.

History
Celebrating Over 40 Years of Building Something Better.
AVB formed in 1981 by Joe Gesmundo and Daryl Rynd, who shared a passion for creating great places to live and work. Together, AVB’s founding principals collaborated on the Kalamazoo area’s premier master-planned community, Woodbridge Hills. This visionary mixed-use community includes a retail center, medical and surgical buildings, office buildings, luxury condominiums, upscale private residences, and a private golf course. Today, AVB is a leading regional construction and development firm, dedicated to building great homes, buildings, and developments.
AVB’s commercial construction portfolio includes projects such as the Ascension Borgess Surgery Expansion, the Stryker Corporation World Headquarters, Portage Public Schools, the AIA award winning Newell Brands International Design Center, Consumers Credit Union Headquarters, and the LEED Gold certified 400 Rose apartments in downtown Kalamazoo. Significant renovation projects include the Green Building of America Award-winning Educational Community Credit Union (now Arbor Financial) on 9th Street, Cole Nissan dealership in Kalamazoo, Ascension Borgess at Woodbridge Hills South, Kalamazoo Maple Street YMCA, and the Ignertia Building brownfield redevelopment project in downtown Kalamazoo.
AVB’s development portfolio includes over a billion dollars’ worth of projects in Southwest Michigan. These projects include residential condominium communities like Oakland Hills, Whisper Rock, Walden Woods, as well as home communities like The Homestead, Barrington Shores, The Marshes, Turning Stone, and Hidden Lake. Additionally, AVB has developed apartment communities such as Greenspire in Portage, MI, as well as commercial developments such as Corner @ Drake in Kalamazoo, Westgate in Portage, and the Trade Centre in Portage, which all include restaurant, retail, and office establishments.

We have a history as an environmentally-conscious builder and developer. This formed the foundation of our commitment to sustainability. A quick tour of any AVB project shows our focus on being stewards of our earth. Creating projects that integrate with nature is simply part of our DNA. Several of AVB’s staff have earned LEED® AP status. We construct projects with a sustainable focus with several achieving LEED certification. We encourage clients to consider the full range of energy efficient opportunities when designing and constructing their project. We are a leader in building Energy Star, Green Built, and HERS rated and certified homes. Our homes are consistently built 30% – 50% more energy efficient than required by the latest energy codes. We use minimally-intrusive site staging to cut site disturbance. We promote energy savings, sustainabilty and consevation on all jobsites.

To build a better community, we focus on great projects and a commitment to community service. AVB and our employees are active supporters of many organizations in greater Kalamazoo. AVB employees serve on the boards of 16 non-profit organizations in Kalamazoo County, and team members are involved in volunteer efforts and public service through a variety of community organizations.
