AVB is serving as Construction Manager for Western Michigan University’s new Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education (MGRRE), a specialized 20,000-square-foot facility on WMU’s Parkview Campus designed to support advanced geological research, education, and long-term preservation of Michigan’s geologic data.
Working closely with WMU and the Michigan Geological Survey, AVB managed the delivery of a purpose-built building that balances durability, flexibility, and operational efficiency. The facility includes high-density mobile racking systems for expanded core storage, dedicated laboratory spaces, and a public viewing area, all tailored to support the repository’s evolving research and educational needs.
The project required careful coordination to accommodate the storage and handling of hundreds of thousands of linear feet of geological core samples collected over the past century, while also creating an active, accessible environment for students, researchers, and collaborators.
The MGRRE facility strengthens WMU’s research infrastructure and provides a long-term home for one of Michigan’s most important geological resources, supporting innovation in areas such as critical minerals, carbon storage, and natural resource management.
