The Charter Township of Kalamazoo is making a major investment in public safety with the construction of the new Eastwood Fire Station at 2409 Texel Drive, replacing the outdated facility on East Main Street originally built in the 1940s. This project broke ground in November 2025 following the demolition of a former church on the site, and is expected to be completed in early 2027. The new station is designed as a modern, energy-efficient facility that enhances emergency response capabilities and supports firefighter readiness. Key construction features include three extended truck bays—nearly twice the length of the current station’s—to accommodate existing engines and allow for future expansion, updated living quarters for on-duty staff, and a designated public entrance with 30 parking spaces. The building will also include a community room for training and outreach, along with improved circulation and accessibility for both staff and visitors.
The design vision emphasizes safety, efficiency, and long-term sustainability. The station will provide expanded space and modern amenities to meet the needs of a growing community. The layout prioritizes operational flow for first responders, integrates energy-efficient systems, and creates a welcoming environment for public engagement.
This project is part of a broader Township strategy to modernize civic infrastructure, including plans for a centralized Township campus on Douglas Avenue. Funding for the fire station comes from a $1 million state grant and a township-wide special assessment, chosen for its transparency and fiscal responsibility. The Eastwood Fire Station represents more than a new building—it reflects a unified vision to protect health, safety, and well-being for the next 50 years and beyond.
