Architect: Intersect Studio

The City of Kalamazoo is renovating its Crosstown Facility at 150 E. Crosstown Parkway to create a modern, efficient, and community-focused municipal hub. This renovation project involves selective demolition and extensive interior upgrades across multiple divisions of work, including concrete, masonry, metals, woodwork, thermal and moisture protection, openings, and finishes. Structural improvements include new steel framing and decking, cold-formed metal framing, and architectural concrete elements. The building envelope will be enhanced, complemented by metal composite wall panels and soffit panels for durability and energy efficiency. Interior upgrades feature new gypsum board assemblies, ceramic tile, acoustical ceilings, resilient flooring, and architectural woodwork, ensuring a high-quality finish throughout the facility. Security enhancements include hollow metal doors, aluminum-framed entrances, security glazing, and advanced access control systems.

The design vision, led by Intersect Studio, focuses on creating an open, welcoming, and flexible environment that reflects the City’s culture and supports modern workflows. Through collaborative workshops, staff prioritized natural light, secure access between public and private areas, and comfortable outdoor spaces for recharging. The renovated facility will feature varied meeting spaces, private strategy rooms, and technology-enabled areas to streamline public services such as permit scanning and payment processing.

The overall goal is to maximize the building’s role as a resource for both City departments and the community, with a layout that accommodates diverse work styles and future growth. Sustainability is a key component, with energy-efficient systems and biophilic design elements that align with Kalamazoo’s commitment to environmental responsibility and its Imagine Kalamazoo 2025 Strategic Vision.
