The Ecumenical Senior Center is undergoing a transformative redevelopment at 702 N. Burdick Street in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with an estimated completion in Winter 2026. The project includes full demolition of the existing facility and construction of a two-story, 16,000-square-foot building designed to provide a modern, accessible, and community-focused environment for seniors. The structure will feature a steel-framed system with an energy-efficient envelope. Accessibility is a priority, with barrier-free design, elevator access, and ADA-compliant restrooms.

The design vision emphasizes creating a warm, flexible, and inclusive space that fosters community engagement and holistic well-being for seniors. The first floor will include large configurable meeting spaces for events and programs, a commercial-grade kitchen for meal preparation, a fireside lounge and TV room for social interaction, and two outdoor patios with a convenient drop-off/loading zone. The second floor will feature a dedicated fitness area for wellness programs, a craft room and game room for creative and recreational activities, a community office with an exam room for health services, and administrative offices for staff support. Additional features include barrier-free restrooms and elevator access, with spaces designed to encourage socialization, physical activity, and lifelong learning.

This expansion will double the center’s capacity, enabling it to offer more programs, resources, and services to seniors in Kalamazoo. The design prioritizes accessibility, dignity, and community connection, aligning with national senior center standards of excellence.
