The first of many buildings added to the Portage School building program, the 12th Street Elementary project included a two-story, 24-classroom school to house 500 students. Interactive teacher stations enable the instant display and demonstration of learning materials through Technology-Enhanced Classrooms (TEC). Other features, such as a warming kitchen in the cafeteria, allow for versatility as an auditorium with movable walls separating the spaces.
The school was constructed to meet or exceed sustainable design standards for energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and air quality. Many of the materials used were either made of recycled content, used for their future recyclability, or contained low volatile organic compounds, as well as durability. A geothermal system was also installed to provide a renewable energy source for the school.
